The Vancouver Fringe Festival

An annual alternative theatre festival held in Vancouver, British Columbia.

My Role

I was the Lead Designer for the Vancouver Fringe Festival for its 2017 run.

As the Lead Designer, I was in charge of creating all print and web collateral for the festival, and spearheading the creative look of the 2017 festival. The Vancouver Fringe Festival was an amazing place to work at, and I am incredibly humbled to have designed for an organization which valued equity, diversity, and inclusion above all else. The Fringe strives to cultivate a robust, diverse theatre community, and artists at the Fringe receive 100% of the box office revenues generated during the festival!

My vision for the creative look of the festival was to exaggerate on the quirkiness of the festival's nature. I brought in a lot of colours and playfulness for all print and web materials, using vibrant colours to showcase the Fringe's eclecticism, while staying true to the Fringe's authenticity by using the Fringe's beloved mascot "Jimmy". Jimmy is the bald man wearing glasses you will see scattered throughout my work below.

The theme for the Fringe in 2017 was "Get Lucky", thus I also drew inspiration from the colourful, noisy environment of a casino and threw in playful shapes and tones throughout all designed materials, to not only portray the casino environment, but ultimately to play up the Fringe's fun-loving, unconventional nature.

MY VISION:

PROGRAM GUIDE:

The largest project of the Lead Designer is designing a 68 page program guide.

  • This program guide is key to getting the word out around Vancouver of what the Vancouver Fringe Festival offers.

  • The main section of the program guide lists the 100 shows the festival showcases each year, including the artist(s) of each show, a brief show synopsis, show reviews, and each show's location and times.

  • The Challenges:

    • The challenge of creating the program guide was finding a way to display all of this information in a manner that was not overwhelming, and easy to digest.

    • Another challenge was finding a way to incorporate ads throughout the program guide. As a non-profit organization, the Fringe relies on ads and sponsors for funding, thus these must be incorporated into the program guide.

Festival Passes

These were name-tags created for staff, sponsors, artists, volunteers, and board members. Each of these name-tags act as a pass to view shows, as well as identification for staff, sponsors, artists, volunteers, and board members.

Festival Vouchers

These vouchers acted as passes for patrons of the festival.

Print Posters

Posters designed to be put up around Granville Island, the venue for the Vancouver Fringe Festival.

Print Ads

Ads created to be displayed in newspapers such as The Georgia Straight.

Social Media Graphics

Informational graphics created for our social media sites, and meant to be posted on Instagram to create a grid like pattern.

My main goal for these infographics was not only to display this information clearly, but to display the information using a diverse cast of illustrations representing individuals from all cultures and ethnicities. This was to stay true to the Fringe's inclusive nature, and also create more accurate depictions of individuals who are often underrepresented in media.
